The Roof Fix Services Story: Master Craftsmanship in Edinburgh & The Lothians

The 16-Year-Old Apprentice: Mastering the Edinburgh Skyline

The journey of Roof Fix Services Limited began over 22 years ago. At just 16 years old, Patrick Murphy entered the trade with a single goal: to master the historic and challenging rooflines of his home city. He began a rigorous 4-year apprenticeship at RS Pennycook Roofing and Building, one of Edinburgh’s most respected traditional firms. It was here, on the steep pitches of New Town tenements and Morningside villas, that he learned the foundational art of Scottish slating and leadwork from the ground up.

The 'Coutts Standard' & The Redland Shield

To complement his hands-on experience, Patrick underwent elite technical training at the renowned Edinburgh Telford College. He was mentored by Robert (Bob) Coutts—a Master Craftsman and National NFRC Lead Judge widely considered the UK’s highest technical authority in roofing.

Under this elite mentorship, Patrick’s precision was officially recognized in 2007 when he was awarded The Redland Roofing Systems Shield. This remains the industry’s "Gold Standard," proving his work meets the highest manufacturer-audited standards for weatherproofing and structural integrity in the UK.

The "SQA Level 7" Difference: Elite Technical Pedigree

While most roofing contractors stop at a standard apprenticeship (Level 6), Patrick pursued the SQA Advanced Certificate in Roof Slating, Tiling, and Cement Work. This Level 7 qualification (equivalent to an HNC) is held by fewer than 5% of roofers in Scotland. It marks Patrick as a Master Craftsman capable of the complex geometry and structural calculations required for Edinburgh’s Grade-A listed heritage buildings

The Chimney Authority: Dual-Qualified Specialist

Patrick’s expertise extends from the ridge tiles to the internal flues. Following his advanced training, he spent over five years as the Lead Roofer at Auld Reekie Chimney Sweeps, heading up specialist structural repairs and complex flue inspections across Midlothian and East Lothian. This unique background makes Patrick a rare Dual-Qualified Expert: an SQA Advanced Professional Roofer and a NACS-Approved Chimney Specialist.

A Legacy of Trust: From Sole Trader to Limited Company

Since 2014, Roof Fix Services has been built on a foundation of craftsmanship, reliability, and local trust. Starting out as a dedicated sole trader operation, we spent a decade honing our skills and establishing a reputation for excellence in every tile laid and leak repaired. To better serve our growing clientele and reflect the professional scale of our work, we officially transitioned to a small limited company in 2024.

Our Promise: Small Team, Bonafide Craftsmanship

We refuse to use "subbies" or unverified agency labor. Patrick personally oversees every project, working only with a select group of bonafide workers—trusted, skilled tradesmen who share his "Advanced Apprentice" attention to detail and respect for the architectural heritage of Edinburgh and the Lothians.
